Week 10 - No Eating Out: Annual Savings $180
Just in the few weeks that I have been keeping track of our spending, one thing I noticed is that we spend too much money eating out. On average we spend $60 per week. I was very surprised by this number, as we typically only eat out once, maybe twice per week – on Friday and/or Saturday night. However, if you add up lunches, coffee or other snack items during the week it is easy to see how it can quickly add up. So, this week we made a point of not eating out.
It was pretty easy to handle this during the week, as my husband and I typically brown bag our lunches, but the weekend was a little more difficult. As a busy family, I have to admit that it’s nice when we don’t have to cook. I consider our Saturday night meals somewhat of a treat. In the interest of saving money, however, we dedicated weeks throughout the year to eat at home.
Throughout the year I tried to make this activity a little more exciting on the weekend, such as making our own pizza, baking cookies and even ventured into a fun popcorn topping night. I think this brought us closer as a family and introduced some fun activities we would not have discovered otherwise.
Since eating at home is not free either, I deducted the estimated cost of $15 from our average weekly spending habit and calculated a savings of $45 per week. During the year, we did this 4 times for a total annual savings of $180. I think we can do better than that in the future!
