Who wouldn’t want to learn how to save money and reduce your debt without giving up on the things you love? I admit, I am not the thriftiest person, but I dedicated one year to working on my finances. As a MBA graduate and Finance Major I should know how to do this – right? Well, unfortunately I’m embarrassed to admit that at 36 years old, I had a large amount of credit card debt from buying what I wanted, when I wanted. Credit cards were always an answer to me and I justified each purchase because I was able to make at least the minimum payment, on-time each month.
This site will outline a week by week activity that I did to save money. While it does entail my personal experiences, it can be applied to anyone’s situation, regardless of income. You will be astonished on how some simple activities can save so much money!
Going into this project there are a few things that you will need to keep in mind. First, just like any lifestyle change you will need to stick to your convictions and make sure your family is willing to follow the rules as well. Second, your mentality needs to change when shopping. This can be done just by asking yourself a simple question – Do I NEED this or WANT this? This rule applies to any purchases – including groceries. Lastly, be patient. Saving money requires extra work and disciple and patience will be required!
I know there are thousands of tips out there on how to save money – and we’ve all heard them. The beauty of my technique is to handle them one week at a time. This makes them more manageable and keeps me focused without becoming overwhelmed.
This philosophy can start anytime, although I started at the first of the year. It can also be used over and over again – year after year, as many principals can be applied to your everyday life.
